FIELD TEST RATIONALE

Almost 2,000 years ago, a young Jewish woman from the town of Nazareth, named Mary, was visited by an angel named Gabriel. Gabriel told Mary that she would have a son named Jesus, who would be God’s Son.

At this time, Mary was engaged to her soon-to-be husband, Joseph. When told, Joseph was hurt and confused because he did not believe Mary. The angel Gabriel visited Joseph and told him, “do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife, because what is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit,” and her son, Jesus, would save the people from their sins.

Our Field Test, “The Nativity”, honours the birth of Jesus Christ. Each movement and rep scheme has been designed with intent, referencing the events that took place as documented in Luke 2: 1-20.

Reps and Movements broken down

90 Double Unders represent the estimated 90 mile journey from Nazareth to Bethlehem.

9 Thrusters represent the 9 months Mary carried Jesus, the difficulty of this situation is expressed in one of the most taxing movements, thrusters, the control of going up down and pushing. Heavy thrusters is the ultimate test of strength and perseverance.

1 Power Snatch representing the birth of the Savior
1 Hang Squat Snatch representing the angel Gabriel
Snatches are the biggest movement in weightlifting and the most vulnerable. Faith is required throwing a weight overhead, especially a heavy weight. The hands overhead and the strong ending position of a snatch signifies the victory and confidence with each rep.

40 Calories represent the 40 days of purification Mary had to undergo after the birth of Jesus, as was the tradition at the time. There is nothing more purifying than an air bike for calories…

1 Power Clean represents the star the wisemen followed to visit Jesus.
3 Hang Squat Cleans represent the gifts presented by the wisemen
Cleans are a counter to the snatches, working a different muscle group and technique, by now the body should be taxed.

20 Bar Facing Burpees represent the 20 mile journey fleeing Bethlehem to Egypt, to escape Herod. After all the hard work the fight keeps on continuing and what’s more terrifying than a big set of bar facing burpees? It requires a large degree of effort standing up, turning, jumping and going back down. But it’s a movement that is limited by your mental capacity to tell yourself not to spend too much time on the floor resting and one where you can move fast, even under fatigue. Bar facing burpees are one of the biggest mind game movements.

To successfully complete The Nativity Field Test, you will need to perform the above movements as prescribed, as fast as possible, in one testing session. Your score will be the time you take to complete the workout.
